The brief

What the client needed.

Chouette Sauvageonne needed a flagship that read like an editorial spread, not an online store. Their existing Shopify theme was a customised Dawn fork — fast to build, wrong for the brand.

The brief: keep the merchandising simple, invest heavily in typography and art direction, and launch before the holiday season with a members' collection flow for their Insiders Circle.

Non-negotiables: Core Web Vitals green on all product templates, editor UX simple enough that their brand team could add lookbooks without an engineer.

Rationale

Liquid gave the merchant team direct control without a headless build's operational overhead. Alpine and Web Components handled interactivity without a framework runtime. Metaobjects modelled the Insiders Circle content — Shopify-native, editor-friendly, no external CMS.

The approach

Step by step.

01

Editorial typography system

We built a type system in Fraunces (display) and Inter (body) with a modular scale tuned across 5 breakpoints. Every product page inherits the same rhythm — the storefront reads like one continuous magazine.

02

Hand-tuned product grid

A 12-column grid with asymmetric hero moments for hero products and editorial 2-column layouts for lookbooks. All controlled via section settings so the brand team can rearrange without touching code.

03

Insiders Circle membership flow

Metaobject-modelled tiers, gated collections, and a passwordless entry flow. Members see exclusive drops the moment they land.

04

Performance rescue

Stripped 12 legacy apps, replaced 3 with theme-native equivalents, deferred non-critical JS. LCP dropped from 4.8s to 1.5s on product pages.

Results

What shipped, measured.

Six weeks from kickoff to launch. Conversion rate up 42% in the first month against the same period a year prior. LCP improved from 4.8s to 1.5s. The brand team ships new lookbooks weekly without engineering support.

They delivered what our previous agency spent six months arguing about. The store finally looks like our brand, and the editor is simple enough that we don't need a developer for content updates.
